The Law Society of Ontario, in partnership with the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association, will host a discussion focusing on transgender youth issues.

The discussion, which will be held on June 19 at the LSO’s Donald Lamont Learning Centre in Toronto, is part of the organizers’ celebration of Pride Month. The theme will be: ‘Transgender Youth and Inclusion: Sexual Health Education in Ontario.’

According to a statement by the LSO, the topic was chosen in light of the recent human rights claims filed to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario by two Toronto transgender students over Ontario's sex-education curriculum changes.

Noah Sparrow, one of the applicants, is a panelist at this event. The other panelists are Andrea Luey, lawyer at Justice for Children and Youth and counsel for Sparrow, Marcus McCann, human rights lawyer and counsel for AB (another youth HRTO applicant) and Dr Jake Pyne, Banting postdoctoral fellow at the University of Guelph.

The discussion’s moderator will be Amy Wah, policy lawyer at HIV and AIDS Legal Clinic Ontario. Law Society treasurer Malcolm Mercer will deliver the opening remarks.

The discussion will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and will be followed by a reception that will last until 8:30 p.m.
