Law Commission of Ontario announces new board of governors appointments

The Law Commission of Ontario (LCO) has officially announced the appointment of four new members to its Board of Governors.

The newly appointed board members are Trevor C.W. Farrow, Bradley W. Miller, Julie Lassonde, and Aaron Shull.

Trevor C.W. Farrow, dean and professor at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, will represent the law school on the board starting September 14. Farrow is well-known for his scholarly work on access to justice, legal processes, and legal education. He has conducted significant research, including a pioneering national study on the costs of accessing justice in Canada, funded by a $1 million grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

Farrow is the chair of the Canadian Forum on Civil Justice, the founding academic director of the Winkler Institute for Dispute Resolution, and the Director of the York Centre for Public Policy and Law. He was also formerly a litigation lawyer at the Torys law firm in Toronto.

Bradley W. Miller, a justice of the Court of Appeal for Ontario since 2015, has been on the board as a representative of the judiciary since January 1. Before his appointment, Justice Miller practised commercial and constitutional litigation.  He was a law professor at the University of Western Ontario from 2005-2015, where he was a founding member of Western Law's Public Law and Legal Philosophy Research Group.

Julie Lassonde, a social justice lawyer and mediator based in Toronto and Montreal, will start her role as a member-at-large on May 21. Lassonde has extensive legal and advocacy work focused on women's rights and the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. She has been a member of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, acted as a designated representative for the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada and served as a commissioner at the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Lassonde is also a visual arts performance artist and was previously an artist-in-residence at Osgoode Hall Law School.

Aaron Shull, also joining as a member-at-large on May 21, is the managing director and general counsel for The Centre for International Governance Innovation in Waterloo. His expertise includes public policy, cybersecurity, and national security, with significant contributions to policy development on a national scale.

The LCO thanked and bid farewell to members Mary Condon, Paul Rouleau, and Geneviève Painchaud. “Their hard work and dedication to the LCO’s work over the many years have significantly contributed to the LCO’s success,” the Commission said.
