International law firm Fasken has launched Meese AI, a Toronto-based technology company specializing in legal automation.

As its inaugural endeavour, Meese AI has developed an artificial intelligence platform that helps lawyers automate, enable and enlighten legal tasks.

According to Fasken, Meese AI’s platform uses machine learning and natural language programming to assist lawyers in completing client deliverables. With these technologies, it can understand legal data as well as highlight possible improvements within the document, providing the user with more insight into their work. It is designed to harmonize, integrate with and enhance a lawyers’ work, the firm said in a statement.

The current version of the AI platform includes an advanced proofreading tool that identifies drafting issues and a unique smart knowledge management tool that searches precedent clauses, allowing lawyers to curate their own precedent databases. Fasken said that with less time spent on repetitive tasks, lawyers can spend more time on complex issues adding to the strategic value that they can bring to their clients.

“We are incubating and using artificial intelligence to enhance the work of our lawyers: to increase quality and reduce costs for the benefit of our clients,” said Mark Bowman, founder of Meese AI and counsel at Fasken. “We’ve built a platform to integrate with all aspects of legal work, to thrive within the demanding requirements of a top-tier law firm and to augment the already great work that our lawyers produce.”
