She will represent the Law Deans of Ontario
Colleen Flood has joined the Law Commission of Ontario’s board of governors, representing the Law Deans of Ontario.
The Queen’s University faculty of law dean took her seat on the board on January 30.
Flood has contributed significantly to health law. She has contributed to national and international discussions on privatization, health care system design, accountability, governance, and the courts’ role in defending health care rights. She was the first director of the Centre for Health Law, Policy and Ethics. She was also the health law and policy research chair at the University of Ottawa from 2014 to 2023.
From 2000 to 2014, she was part of the University of Toronto’s law faculty as a professor and Canada research chair. In 2022, she was named a Justice Emmet Hall Laureate.
In 2021, Flood joined the Canadian Council of Academies scientific advisory committee and the Royal Society Taskforce on COVID-19. She has been published and cited in publications on the implementation of digital passport for COVID-19 immunizations, the in and outs of vaccines, and COVID-birthed legal concerns.
She commenced as Queen’s University law faculty dean on July 1, 2023 for a five-year term, a role she told Law Times brought into play her administrative knowledge into play, including budget setting, organization management, and the elevation of research and knowledge.
Flood holds a Doctor of Juridical Science and a Master of Laws from the University of Toronto. She obtained her Bachelor of Laws (hours) from the University of Auckland in New Zealand.
At present, she is investigating the governance of health-related artificial intelligence, according to the LCO.
The LCO board of governors comprises the founding partners’ representatives and at-large members. It sets the LCO’s policy in addition to approving projects, discussion papers and reports. Governors typically serve a three-year term.
Flood joins a board currently consisting of chair Raj Anand, Andrew Bernstein, Neha Chugh, Trevor Farrow, Kingsley Jesuorobo, Randall Kahgee, Shalini Konanur, Julie Lassonde, Jane Mallen, Justice Bradley W. Miller, and Aaron Shull.
