Do you know anyone on the Sunshine List?

The annual Sunshine List of Ontario public sector employees who received more than $100,000 in compensation in 2016 featured more than 123,000 names when it was released on March 31. While there have been some calls to increase the salary level that triggers disclosure, Statistics Canada data issued last year shows that $100,000 is still more than the median family income in any Ontario city. The highest median family income for a metropolitan area was $97,760 in Ottawa-Gatineau. Meanwhile, the top one per cent of total average income for tax filers in Canada was $466,700. Of the 123,000 names on the latest Sunshine List, thousands of the individuals are lawyers working in the public sector.

On this chart, Law Times lists, in descending order by salary, the top 10 earners from the Ministry of the Attorney General as well as law professors and other legal professionals working as counsel, general counsel, solicitors, directors of legal services and in other senior roles among various municipal and provincial bodies and regulators. The list does not include federally appointed judges. The highest level of compensation for someone practising as a lawyer went to Chris Ginther, senior vice president and general counsel at Ontario Power Generation.
Ginther, who earned $531,500 last year, was recently promoted to chief administrative officer of the public agency.

The standard salary for a judge sitting on the Ontario Court of Justice rose to just less than $289,000 last year, which is not far behind the $308,600 salary for judges on the Ontario Superior Court. In the educational sector, law professors at all universities continue to be compensated less than those in the business and medicine faculties. Professors at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, however, still earn much more on average than their colleagues at other law schools.

Seventeen law professors at U of T earned more than the highest-paid professor at any other law school in Ontario. As well, seven professors, including U of T law dean Edward Iacobucci, earned more than Patrick Monahan, deputy attorney general of Ontario, one of the most powerful public sector legal jobs in the country.
