Chorney will serve in Walkerton, while Reccord will serve in Pembroke
The Ontario government has announced the appointment of two new judges, Justice Christopher Chorney and Justice Christa Reccord, to the Ontario Court of Justice.
Justice Christopher Chorney was called to the Ontario bar in 1996. He initially practised criminal law independently in Toronto and later served as an assistant Crown attorney in York Region from 1999 to 2004. Justice Chorney’s extensive career includes roles in criminal law policy at the Ministry of the Attorney General, legal counsel at the Office of the Chief Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice, and counsel at the Courontat of Appeal for Ontario. He also served as Crown counsel at the Crown Law Office – Criminal.
Since 2017, Justice Chorney has been an assistant Crown attorney in the Toronto West Crown Attorney’s Office, contributing to criminal prosecutions across various aspects of the justice system. In addition to his legal career, he has actively volunteered as a mentor with the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council.
Justice Chorney has also contributed to legal education, teaching criminology at Toronto Metropolitan University and presenting at professional development programs organized by the Ontario Bar Association, the Law Society of Ontario, and the National Judicial Institute. Furthermore, he developed an interactive criminal justice program with the Ontario Justice Education Network. Chief Justice Sharon Nicklas has assigned Justice Chorney to serve in Walkerton.
Justice Christa Reccord has worked with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, where she was most recently the acting deputy chief federal prosecutor. Called to the Newfoundland and Labrador bar in 2003 and to the Ontario bar in 2011, Justice Reccord managed day-to-day operations at the national capital regional office before her judicial appointment.
Justice Reccord served as president of the Rotary Club of Ottawa Metro, supporting youth programs and community fundraising initiatives. She has also volunteered with Roger Neilson Children's Hospice, which offers care to families dealing with life-limiting illnesses and was a member of Barristers for a Better Bytown. Chief Justice Sharon Nicklas has assigned Justice Reccord to serve in Pembroke.
These new appointments are effective as of October 24.
