Superior Court of Justice welcomes new judge Kerry Lee McVey

She worked as a crown attorney at the Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario in Perth

Minister of Justice and Attorney General Arif Virani has announced the appointment of Kerry Lee McVey as judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in Ottawa.

McVey was a crown attorney at the Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario in Perth. She was raised in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and obtained a law degree from the University of Ottawa. Before entering law school, McVey worked in the field of software design. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and computer science from Acadia University in 1999. McVey received the Lieutenant Governor's Medal and Governor General's Medal for academic excellence and community involvement during her academic years.

After obtaining a law degree, McVey clerked for the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (East Region) and Justice Morris J. Fish at the Supreme Court of Canada. She was called to the Ontario bar in 2011 and became an assistant crown attorney in Ottawa.

In 2019, McVey joined the Office of the Director of Crown Operations as a member of the provincial internet child exploitation team. She also taught several courses at the Canadian Police College on internet child exploitation and search and seizure. She served as a co-director for the Cybercrime crown summer school program.

Shortly before her appointment to the bench, McVey was the crown attorney for Lanark County and Smiths Falls.

"I wish Justice McVey every success as she takes on her new role. I am confident she will serve Ontarians well as a member of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario," Minister Virani said.

McVey replaces Justice R. Laliberté (L'Orignal), who resigned effective June 7 and whose vacancy was transferred to Ottawa. McVey was appointed following the judicial application process established in 2016. This process emphasizes transparency, merit, and diversity. It facilitates the appointment of jurists who meet the highest standards of excellence and integrity.
