Pina D'Agostino named associate vice-president research at York University

Intellectual property law expert Giuseppina D’Agostino has been appointed associate vice-president research at York University.

D’Agostino started in the role on April 1. According to Vice-President Research and Innovation Amir Asif, she will remain in the position until June 30, 2026.

As AVPR, D’Agostino will cultivate interdisciplinary research. She will support the research and innovation division in reviewing its core functions and organizational structure, progressing the division’s strategic research plan objectives in line with its existing budget.

She is the Tier 1 York research chair in IP law, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. She founded and is director of the IP Innovation Clinic.

D’Agostino is also co-director of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence & Society and scientific director of the CFREF-funded project Connected Minds. She was an IP expert for Canada’s First Nations Information Governance Centre and co-chaired the York University AI & Society Task Force.

She is a member of the Osgoode Hall Law School faculty. She has testified before the Canadian Parliament and is a cited authority at the Supreme Court of Canada. She was previously a senior policy analyst tackling copyright policy for the Canadian government.

D’Agostino succeeds Jennifer Hyndman and Jen Steeves. Hyndman will step down as AVPR on April 15, while Steeves concluded her last day in the role on March 31.

Hyndman was AVPR for more than four years. She focused on improving organized research units and progressing social sciences and humanities research. She will continue to concentrate on externally funded research and teaching.

Like Hyndman, Steeves will focus on externally funded research and teaching. She concentrated on progressing STEM and health-related research initiatives in her three-year tenure as AVPR. She spearheaded the Discover York Academics and the Research Commons projects.

The research and innovation division will consult with the faculties and organized research units with regard to the review and provide an update on its status.
