Competition law veteran Kate McNeece commences with Goodmans as counsel

Competition law expert Kate McNeece has commenced as counsel in Goodmans LLP’s competition and foreign investment group.

She has tackled mergers and acquisitions, marketing and distribution practices, abuse of dominance, and investigations; she has also advised on competition compliance concerns like commercial agreements, greenwashing, drip pricing and deceptive marketing matters.

McNeece has helped foreign investors to navigate complex national security reviews under the Investment Canada Act. In particular, she worked on SOE reviews and negotiated mitigation agreements.

Her clients operate in the upstream and downstream energy, renewable energy, construction, telecommunications and consumer products sectors.

Prior to joining Goodmans McNeece was a partner at McCarthy Tétrault LLP, working with the competition/antitrust and foreign investment group in Toronto. During her six-year stint with the firm, she advised Zijin Mining Group Co. on its $1.4 billion acquisition of Continental Gold Inc. She also worked with Facebook with regard to the Commissioner of Competition’s deceptive marketing investigation into privacy matters.

She advised Parkland Corp. as it acquired Husky retail gas stations from Cenovus Energy Inc. In addition, she advised Shandong Gold Mining Co. on a now-terminated proposed acquisition of TMAC Resources Inc.

McNeece started her legal career with US firm Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP in Washington D.C. She was called to the New York Bar in 2014 and the Ontario Bar in 2015. She was an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School from August 2016 to December 2016, as per LinkedIn.

In July 2014, she joined Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP’s competition, antitrust and foreign investment team, where she remained until March 2018. She also recorded stints with Human Rights Watch in New York, serving as an intern in the international justice program from February 2012 to April 2012 and again from January 2013 to May 2013.

McNeece hosted the CBA competition and foreign investment section podcast “Counterfactual.”
