The Federation of Ontario Law Associations (FOLA) has appointed Rasim “Sam” Misheal as its new chairman. Misheal will help advance the organization's goal of advocating on behalf of the province’s 46 county and district law associations.

“As Chair, I am committed to fostering a collaborative relationship with government to address the evolving needs of our legal system,” Misheal said in FOLA’s news release. “Promoting advancements in legal technology and prioritizing mental health within our profession are key to ensuring a robust, forward-thinking legal community.”

FOLA's news release said Misheal, admitted to the Ontario bar in 2007, has a track record of leading the legal profession, a passion for advocacy, and a commitment to community service. He is a Burlington-based child protection and family lawyer.

“We must also address the unique challenges faced by rural areas, working to attract and support lawyers in these communities while ensuring the sustainability of our law association libraries as essential resources,” Misheal added in the news release. “Finally, I will champion the digitization of our courts, embracing innovation to enhance access to justice for all.”

Misheal’s professional accomplishments include serving as chairman of FOLA’s family law section, president of the Halton County Law Association, and dispute resolution officer of the Family Court.

He has mentored young lawyers, has volunteered with the Ontario Justice Education Network, and has supported organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters.

FOLA also announced after its recent fall plenary that Allen Wynperle will become its first vice chairman.

Past chairmen

In its news release, FOLA thanked outgoing chairman Douglas Judson for his service over the previous two terms.

“Sam is an exceptional leader with a deep commitment to the legal profession and the communities we serve,” Judson said in FOLA’s news release. “His extensive experience in family law, dispute resolution, and advocacy, combined with his dedication to supporting lawyers across Ontario, makes him the ideal Chair for FOLA.”

Judson has now become past chairman of the organization. “Sam’s forward-thinking approach, passion for innovation, and genuine care for the well-being of others will undoubtedly strengthen our organization and the profession as a whole,” Judson added in the news release. “I have every confidence that under his leadership, FOLA will continue to thrive and address the challenges and opportunities facing our legal community.”

FOLA also expressed gratitude to Bill Woodward, the organization's outgoing past chairman, for his dedicated work. In its news release, FOLA explained that its board will be electing a new second vice chairman next month.
